Students Smashed By Police, Komnas HAM: Police Must Investigate This Incident

JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) asked the police to thoroughly investigate allegations of violence experienced by students who were demonstrating in front of the Tangerang Regency Government Center (Puspemkab).

In a video that circulated, a student who was later identified as Faris was seen being slammed to the floor by an officer. This incident occurred when the Police secured a student demonstration right on the 389th Birthday of the Tangerang Regency.

"The police must thoroughly investigate this incident", said Komnas HAM Commissioner, Beka Ulung Hapsara, through his Twitter account @BekaHapsara quoted Wednesday, October 13.

In addition, the National Police are asked to give strict sanctions to the perpetrators of violence and ensure that the same treatment does not happen again.

"Komnas HAM condemns the treatment of the officers against fellow students who are conducting peaceful demonstrations", he added via a short message.

As previously reported, Faris was unconscious after being slammed in a violent demonstration that took place in Tangerang recently. Even so, the student admitted that he was in good health and only felt sore even though in the video the police slammed him against a hard surface.

"I'm not dead, now I'm still alive. In normal circumstances, although a little sore", he said while introducing himself after being ordered by a police officer named Leonard, reported by era.id.

What's sadder, it turns out that Faris also admitted that he had not eaten lunch. "Breakfast is done, but if you eat rice, you haven't", he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Public Relations of the Banten Police, AKBP Shinto Silitonga, said he confirmed the incident. However, the police do not know who acted brutally.

"We don't know the names of this personnel, we need a moment to contact the security guards there, so they can be contacted in a moment, after the facts we get", he said.
