JAKARTA - Spokesperson for the COVID-19 Task Force, Wiku Adisasmito, said that the number of COVID-19 cases in the XX Papua PON continues to increase.

Currently, there are 34 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Those who were exposed ranged from athletes, officials, to PON organizers. However, said Wiku, all those who were confirmed positive were asymptomatic.

"To date, there are 34 positive cases of COVID-19 in the XX PON, all of them are asymptomatic and are expected to recover soon," said Wiku in a virtual press conference, Thursday, October 7.

Wiku asked all participants in the Papua PON to remain aware of the potential for COVID-19 transmission by being disciplined in carrying out health protocols.

Then, when returning to the area of origin, all parties are required to retest COVID-19 as an early detection of virus transmission.

"All PON participants are required to strictly carry out health procedures upon arrival in their area of origin through quarantine and retesting as an effort to ensure the health of post-PON contingents," said Wiku.

Furthermore, the government is currently preparing a mechanism for the return of all parties participating in the PON Papua event so as not to spread COVID-19. One of them is by doing quarantine.

"Currently the committee is tightening health screening and soon the government will prepare a mechanism for the return of event participants, for example quarantine, testing upon return, and so on," he said.

Wiku said this mechanism was carried out to ensure that Papuan PON participants did not carry the corona virus when they returned to their area of origin.

He continued, the government had followed up on the findings of COVID-19 cases in athletes competing at the Papua PON in accordance with the guidelines that had been prepared, such as placing quarantine in the facilities provided.

"There are 58 centralized isolation facilities spread across the province of Papua with 11 percent occupancy and 2,027 beds remaining. The local government will continue to monitor the circulation of patients in and out and strive for every patient undergoing isolation to recover," he concluded.
