ACEH - The Suar Galang Justice Institute (LSGK) has urged the perpetrators involved in the death of five Sumatran elephants in Aceh Jaya Regency to receive severe punishment. This punishment can provide a deterrent effect as well as a lesson for other communities.

LSGK Program Manager Missi Muizzan said the police had shown seriousness and commitment in law enforcement. His party highly appreciates the Aceh Jaya Police for successfully arresting 11 perpetrators suspected of being involved in the death of the protected wildlife.

"It is also important at the time of the trial that the perpetrators be charged and sentenced to the maximum sentence," said Missi Muizzan in a statement received in Banda Aceh, Antara, Thursday, September 16.

The case of the death of the Sumatran elephant emerged when five Sumatran elephant skeletons were found in Tuwi Peuryia Village, Pasie Raya District, Aceh Jaya Regency in early 2020.

LSGK is actively involved in guarding the case. Likewise with cases of criminal acts of other protected wild plants and animals. Starting from taking part directly to the scene of the case to overseeing the legal process.

Now, the Aceh Jaya Police have 11 perpetrators suspected of being involved in the deaths of five elephants, namely HD (39), LH (43), HI (46), SP (62), MR (32), ZB (25), MA (38 ), then SD (49), AM (61), and two other people who helped sell and buy ivory, namely IF (46) and MN (68).

LSGK demanded that all perpetrators be severely punished. Likewise punishment for elephant ivory collectors. They must get the maximum sanction as regulated in Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and Their Ecosystems.

According to Missi, the perpetrator of the death of the elephant in Aceh Jaya sold the elephant tusk to the same collector as the case of the death of a headless elephant in East Aceh Regency in July 2021, namely MD (49).

"He (MD) acts as an elephant ivory reservoir for a crime that occurred in Aceh Jaya in January 2020. And even he is also a recidivist who has committed the same crime in 2016," he said.

In addition, LSGK also hopes that the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) can optimally carry out prevention in the form of socialization, as well as posting pamphlets related to criminal threats in hunting protected animals.

"The BKSDA is also responsible for supervising and monitoring the circulation of protected plants and animals in its territory, including monitoring efforts for captive breeding and maintenance of protected plants and animals by individuals, companies, and conservation institutions," he said.
