River Overflows Due To High Rainfall, 2 Districts In Papua Are Submerged By Floods

JAKARTA - The districts of the Yapen and Nabire Islands, Papua are flooded. Floods inundated residents' settlements due to overflowing rivers due to high rainfall.

Plt. Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said there were two districts in Yapen Regency that were flooded.

"Two districts were affected, namely Kp Immandoa, Kp Manaini, Kp Rawa Gang 1, Kp China Tua in Serui Kota Village and Kp Bawai in Tarau Village, South Yapen District, and Anotaurei District", Abdul Muhari said in his statement, Tuesday, September 14.

In addition to flooding, Abdul Muhari said this incident also resulted in 2 units of landslides in Kp Imandoa.

Meanwhile, the Nabire Regency BPBD recorded that 1050 families in Yaro District, namely Yaro 1 (Jaya Mukti) and Yaro 2 (Makmur) were affected by this incident.

"Yaro 1 (Jaya Mukti) as many as 250 families were affected, while Yaro 2 (Prosperous) as many as 250 families were affected", he said.

The results of field monitoring show that the current water level is between 40 - 200 centimeters. With this condition, the bridge access to Parauto Village, Nabire Regency is cut off.

BPBD Nabire Regency deployed rubber boats to collect data and coordinate with parties related to flood disaster management. This is because the existing bridge access is flooded.

"BNPB urges local governments and communities to increase their preparedness for potential weather that triggers hydrometeorological hazards such as floods, landslides, and strong winds", he concluded.
