Surya Paloh: Let Alone 1 KPK, 100 KPK Have No Effect

JAKARTA - Chairman of the National Democratic Party (NasDem) Surya Paloh, emphasized that Indonesia needs a culture of shame to prevent corrupt behavior, beyond the existence of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

"Starting from family education, formal education, to social interactions in daily life. It creates a culture of the principle of decency that should not be separated," said Surya Paloh in a national dialogue on the 50th anniversary of CSIS Indonesia online, Monday, August 23. Paloh said, there is no country in this world that is free from corruption. Therefore, he said, Indonesia needs a culture of shame to become a movement to prevent corruption.

"If we don't know the culture of shame, let alone 1 KPK, 100 KPK will not provide any effective power in the effort to eradicate corruption," said Surya Paloh in a national dialogue on the 50th anniversary of CSIS Indonesia online, Monday, August 23.

"Objectively it has done a lot, it even seems that sometimes things have been dramatized in the approach to eradicating corruption," said Paloh.

He gave an example, such as the term arrest. According to him, there was a giver and a receiver at the same time that they were caught.

"However, one giver in Medan, the recipient in Surabaya is also said to be caught red-handed. That's a dramatization," he said.

However, Paloh appreciated the performance of the KPK, which is the anti-corruption agency that has arrested most officials. Both those who have completed their term of office and those who are currently on duty.

"We need to appreciate this, we need to guard it, so we must carry out efforts to eradicate corruption. But the problem of corruption culture is that no country is free from corruption, not on the surface of the earth. This is a big and small problem," concluded Paloh.
