M 5.9 Earthquake In Central Sulawesi, BMKG: Due To Local Fault Deformation

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency explained that the 5.9 magnitude tectonic earthquake in Tojo Una-Una Regency, Central Sulawesi on Monday at 10.52 western Indonesia time, was a shallow earthquake due to deformation due to local faults.

This is when viewed from the epicenter of the earthquake which is located at coordinates 0.74 degrees South Latitude, 121.88 degrees East Longitude, or precisely located at sea at a distance of 55 km to the Northeast of Tojo Una-Una Regency, Central Sulawesi at a depth of 10 km.

The results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that the earthquake had a normal movement mechanism (Normal Fault)," said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Bambang Setiyo Prayitno in a statement in Jakarta, quoted by Antara, Monday, July 26.

Bambang said the earthquake shocks were felt in the Ampana III-IV MMI area (when many people felt it in the house during the day), Poso, Wakai III MMI (the vibration felt real in the house).
