JAKARTA - Russian authorities plan to develop the Sukhoi Su-57 5th generation fighter jet in a two-seat version, making it the first in the current era of modern fighter jets.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Yuri Borisov, revealed that the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Sukhoi Design Bureau are planning to develop the Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter with two seats in an export configuration.
"There is interest in this aircraft and, in my opinion, it will grow every year because our Russian Army is supplied with this model. Foreign customers initially see how certain weapons of the Russian Armed Forces operate", he said on a work trip to the Primorye Region, Russia's Far East last Wednesday, as quoted by TASS on Friday, June 18.
"The Ministry of Defense and the Sukhoi Design Bureau have plans to develop a two-pilot aircraft which will increase export demand for this model. And that could create additional demand", Borisov continued.
Separately, Russian state technology company Rostec called the Sukhoi Su-57 the world's first two-seat, fifth-generation fighter aircraft, which they are currently developing for an export version.
"This aircraft is needed in the training of flight personnel, to reduce the psychological stress of inexperienced pilots. Also to perform long flights on terrain that lacks features", the Rostec press office said in a statement.
"Let us note that currently, no country in the world has a fifth-generation fighter with two seats. Sukhoi may be the first", the statement continued.
