AMM/PMC Best Opportunity for ASEAN and Partners to Discuss Situations that Impact the Regional and Global

JAKARTA - The 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Post-Ministerial Conferences, and Related Meetings (AMM/PMC 59) in Manila, Philippines, which will be held starting today, will be the best opportunity for ASEAN and its partners to discuss the current global situation and its impact on regional and global, said ASEAN spokesperson Dominic Xavier Imperial in a press statement, Monday.

In addition to being attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of ASEAN member countries, except Myanmar, the series of meetings this week will be attended by dialogue partners such as the United States, China, North Korea, the European Union, to Australia. A total of 50 countries will send foreign ministers, ambassadors and senior officials in this series of meetings.

According to Dominic, this is good for ASEAN and its dialogue partners to discuss how to handle the current situation and how ASEAN will move forward.

"This (series of meetings) is very important, because this is where ASEAN will meet with its dialogue partners. These dialogue partners, of course, are also involved and affected by what is happening globally today. And this is a very good opportunity, a forum for ASEAN's dialogue partners to engage and discuss anything that has an impact not only on ASEAN regionally but also globally," explained Dominic, Monday (20/7).

"With this forum, the dialogue partners in ASEAN will be able to discuss the way forward or how to handle the situation on the ground, and also how ASEAN will move forward regarding what is happening at this time," he said.

'Dominic said, "the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meeting is expected to evaluate ASEAN's progress in the three pillars of the community, review the development of ASEAN's external relations, and exchange views on major regional and international issues affecting the region.

The foreign ministers are also expected to adopt two important outcome documents. First, a joint communique of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting, which will comprehensively reflect the discussions and decisions reached during the meeting, including ASEAN priorities under the three pillars of the community, its engagement with external partners, and a common position on regional and international developments.

And the second, guidelines on the modalities of ASEAN's engagement with parties bound by high-level treaties on the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. This is the result of the Philippine leadership which provides a structured framework for engagement between ASEAN and parties with high commitments, especially those who do not have a partnership with ASEAN. This guideline is intended to strengthen cooperation with these countries while upholding the principles of the TAC as a foundation for peace, stability, and confidence-building in the region.

"The decisions made this week will shape the regional agenda ahead of the 49th ASEAN Summit in the Philippines in November," said Dominic.
