JAKARTA - The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Religion has canceled the 2021 hajj due to the COVID-19 pandemic taking into account the safety and health of prospective pilgrims.

The latest news mentions the cancellation of the Hajj due to a shortage of COVID-19 vaccines.

Consul for Hajj at the Indonesian Consulate General in Jeddah, Endang Jumali, revealed that his party had just received information regarding the reason Saudi Arabia had not announced any official information regarding the 2021 Hajj.

According to him, based on the explanation given by the Minister of Media/Information Saudi, Mr. Majid bin Abdullah Al-Qasabi, the mutation of the COVID-19 virus and the scarcity of vaccines is one of the reasons.

"The mutation of the COVID-19 virus, the scarcity of vaccines, and the development of the COVID-19 outbreak are the reasons Saudi Arabia has not announced the mechanism for organizing this year's Hajj", explained Endang in a statement, Monday, June 7.

He said the Saudi Arabian government had also periodically explained the development of COVID-19 in the holy land.

"The Minister of Media does periodically provide explanations through press conferences regarding the development of COVID-19. And an explanation of the reasons for not announcing the technical operations of the Hajj was delivered at a press conference today", he said.

This Saudi explanation said Endang, also confirmed the statement of Minister of Religion, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, at a press conference on June 3, 2021, that until now there has been no official information from Saudi regarding Hajj operations.

“Indonesia has decided not to send any congregations this year. The decision was taken after a long process of preparation and diplomacy. In fact, the global pandemic is still not under control and Saudi Arabia has not provided any information", he said.
