JAKARTA - Foreign Minister Sugiono welcomed the arrival of 22 Indonesian citizens (WNI) who were included in the first wave of evacuation from Iran, following the escalation in the Middle East.

Those who were evacuated through the facilitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the first wave consisted of 10 Indonesian workers, one teacher/journalist, 14 students/students, two migrant workers and five tourists.

The first batch of 22 Indonesian citizens arrived safely at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten on Tuesday (10/3) at 18.00 WIB after traveling from Baku, Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, the second batch of 10 Indonesian citizens from Iran is expected to arrive at Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

"We welcome you back to Indonesia and welcome you to be reunited with your families," said Foreign Minister Sugiono when welcoming the Indonesian citizens, according to a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tuesday (10/3).

Foreign Minister Sugiono said, in the midst of the development of the situation in Iran and the region, the Indonesian Government's priority is to ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens in the region.

"Since the conflict began, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Indonesian Representative in the Middle East have continued to coordinate closely to monitor the situation, conduct data collection on Indonesian citizens, and discuss contingency measures," explained Foreign Minister Sugiono.

After arriving in the country, the Indonesian citizens will then be assisted by the Regional Government to continue their journey to their respective home areas.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that this evacuation was part of the ongoing efforts of the Government of Indonesia, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Representative abroad, in this case the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran and the Indonesian Embassy in Baku, in ensuring the safety and protection of Indonesian citizens abroad, especially in conflict-affected areas.

Based on the record of the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran, the number of Indonesian citizens recorded in Iran is 329 people, the majority of whom are students or students with a main concentration in the city of Qom, and the rest are Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) and expatriates.
