JAKARTA - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would speak with US President Donald Trump on Monday, January 5, regarding the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and the situation in Gaza.

Speaking to reporters in Istanbul on Friday, January 2, Erdogan said the talks scheduled for Monday afternoon would focus on key developments at the regional level.

"We will call President Trump again on Monday," he said, adding that they would discuss developments between Russia and Ukraine as well as the situation in Palestine, Antara quoted.

Palestine is not alone.

Erdogan also commented on the large pro-Palestinian demonstration held on the Galata Bridge in Istanbul on New Year's Day, and praised the action as a strong message of public solidarity.

"As we enter the new year, we all witnessed a historic moment at the Galata Bridge. It shows clearly that Palestine is not alone," he said.

He underlined that Turkey will continue to support Gaza and the Palestinian people, both at the national level and in coordination with the wider Islamic world.

"We will not leave Gaza or Palestine, and we will never leave it," Erdogan added.

Humanitarian crisis in Gaza

While condemning Israel's continued attacks in Gaza, Erdogan said the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, especially children living in difficult conditions, would not be left alone.

"The suffering of children living in emergency tents in the midst of wind, rain, and mud will not be left alone, and (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu will not escape accountability," he said.

Erdogan noted that humanitarian aid efforts continue to be restricted, including obstacles in the delivery of building materials for temporary housing to Gaza.

Despite the challenges, Erdogan said Turkey would continue to pursue all possible avenues to support the Palestinians and alleviate their suffering.

Ukraine's war diplomacy

Regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine, Erdogan said that Turkey remained in close contact with all parties, including Russia, Ukraine, and Western partners.

He also said that a summit of a coalition of willing countries would be held in Paris next week, and that his presence would be represented by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Erdogan added that diplomatic engagement would continue through upcoming international talks, including his phone conversation with Trump on Monday.
