JAKARTA - Former Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Doni Monardo hand over the position to the newly appointed Head, Ganip Warsito.

In his speech, Doni mentioned that Indonesia, in addition to facing the COVID-19 pandemic, is still often facing disasters. Starting from earthquakes, tsunamis, and liquefaction, volcanic eruptions, to hydrometeorological threats.

"We are also still facing several unfinished problems in rehabilitation and reconstruction programs in various regions because of the frequent disasters", Doni said at Graha BNPB, East Jakarta, Tuesday, May 25.

Doni recalled the World Bank, which named Indonesia as one of the 35 countries with the highest threat level in the world.

"Every year, we experience economic losses of around IDR 22 trillion due to disasters that always increase from year to year", said Doni.

However, Doni mentioned the severity of BNPB's task to overcome the disaster helped by the performance of its ASN. According to Doni, civil servants and all BNPB employees are civilians but militant.

Plus, the task at BNPB is a job that requires strong stamina and also requires determination because it faces so many problems that are not easy in the area when disasters occur.

"Mr. Ganip, I say that BNPB is like Kopassus. In fact, in emergencies and disaster management in various areas, it rarely breaks. You face civilians but militants", he said.

Previously, President Joko Widodo officially appointed Lt. Gen. Ganip Warsito as head of the Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) replacing the retired Doni Monardo.

The inauguration was held at the State Palace on Tuesday, May 25 at around 10:25 a.m. The event continued to follow strict health protocols and attended limited invitations.

Ganip was born in Magelang, November 23, 1963. He graduated from the military academy in 1986 and his last position was Chief of The General Staff of the TNI since February 1, 2021.
