CILACAP - A number of elderly pedicab rioters in Cilacap Regency, Central Java, welcomed the assistance of electric rickshaws which are considered capable of easing physical burdens as well as opening up hopes of increasing income in the midst of competition with modern transportation modes.
The distribution of electricity rickshaws for President Prabowo Subianto's personal assistance was carried out by the National Solidarity Movement Foundation (YGSN) at Wijayakusuma Sakti Hall, Cilacap, Friday, December 6.
One of the beneficiaries, Satiman (63), a resident of Bulusari Village, Gandrungmangu District, admitted that he was greatly helped after decades of pedaling a manual rickshaw. With an electric rickshaw, he hopes the number of passengers will increase again.
"In the past, it could be 1020 draws, now at most 3'4. Alhamdulillah, get an electric rickshaw from the President. Thank you Pak Prabowo, hopefully it will be crowded again," he said as quoted by Antara.
In line with that, Suradi (68), a perempuan pedicak from the Cilacap Square area, also admitted that he was happy even though he was still waiting for the passenger's response.
"What is clear is that it is lighter. But whether it is sold or not, yes, I will see," he said.
A pelayat becak from Sidayakaya Village, South Cilacap District, Kamiun (58), assessed that electric rickshaws will be very helpful, especially when passing through the Kaliyasa Bridge that climbs to the Cilacap Ocean Fishing Port (PPSC). With electricity, he no longer needs to encourage rickshaws when carrying cargo.
He hopes that the use of electric rickshaws can boost his daily income.
"My income is sometimes Rp. 50,000 per day, sometimes Rp. 100,000, depending on passengers and cargo. If it is fitting to unload the cargo of fishing boats, it could be more than Rp. 100,000," he said.
Deputy Chairperson of YGSN, Nanik S Deyang, said that in the early stages, his party distributed 180 units of electric rickshaws in Cilacap, consisting of 80 units in the Sidareja area and 100 units in Cilacap City. All of them are President Prabowo's personal assistance and are produced by PT Pindad.
The main target of the first stage is the elderly rickshaw makers, as an effort to ease the workload and support poverty alleviation. Before receiving assistance, pedicab workers also received training on the use of electric rickshaws.
Many of them are 70'80 years old and have never had a rickshaw, even still renting Rp5,000 a day. The value of this rickshaw is around Rp. 22 million, a personal gift from the president," he said.
He added that this program is also a transition step towards environmentally friendly transportation so that urban air quality will improve.
The Regent of Cilacap, Syamsul Auliya Rachman, expressed his gratitude to President Prabowo and hoped that the electric rickshaw would really be useful.
They don't want to stop working. This electric rickshaw is a solution to lighten energy without pedaling. In addition, they previously rented, now have their own, so that it can increase income," he said.
The Cilacap Regency Government, he continued, is also preparing assistance so that rickshaws are not diverted or sold, and encourages companies through CSR to provide charging points in a number of public spaces.

Syamsul, who had tried to operate an electric tricycle, assessed that the vehicle was easily controlled.
"It's not easy, the steering wheel is comfortable, the brakes are standard. It really helps the rickshaw drivers," said the Regent.
