JAKARTA - Malaysian Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim said Timor Leste is scheduled to become the 11th member of ASEAN in October 2025.
The inauguration of Timor Leste will take place at a meeting of Southeast Asian leaders in Kuala Lumpur.
Timor Leste will become the youngest country in the ASEAN region, after gaining independence from Indonesia 24 years in 2002 after joining the province.
"The acceleration of Timor-Leste to ASEAN will be very beneficial for all of us," Anwar said at a press conference after meeting the President of Timor Leste, Ramos-Horta in Dili, quoted from AFP.
"We will certainly celebrate your participation in ASEAN in October 2025," he continued.
Anwar said the two leaders also discussed trade, investment, tourism, education, and defense during the bilateral meeting on Tuesday.
During his visit, Anwar is also scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister of Timor Leste Xanana Gusmao.
Timor Leste president Jose Ramos-Horta has long campaigned for ASEAN membership, and his petition was first submitted in 2011.
"Our discussions have become a warm and constructive focus on the future as we prepare for our historic access to ASEAN in October in Kuala Lumpur," Horta said.
"We are committed to working closely with Malaysia and all ASEAN members to fulfill the remaining important milestones on our journey towards full membership," he continued.
