In a recent survey conducted by the VAAY website, major cities around the world were assessed for how long the average resident slept, and how often they also lacked sleep. The results were measured against other important factors, such as mental health and average caffeine intake.

"With this study, we really wanted to know the essence of what keeps us awake at night, and whether that changes depending on where we live," Finn Age Hänsel, co-founder of VAAY, told Euronews.

"What is clear from our research is that, often not just one, but many factors, such as the environment, social and political contribute to a city's sleep quality condition," he continued.

A common theme among highly ranked cities is an excellent score in mental and physical well-being, with Amsterdam consistently ranked highly for overall health, regardless of the impact of the pandemic on anxiety levels.

Another interesting finding is the positive impact of work-life balance. On average, countries that reported spending less time working outside of prescribed working hours, and less time to go to work were among the countries with the best sleep quality. Dresden had the lowest overtime and round-trip time and was seventh overall.
