JAKARTA - The United States government now has a better understanding of the conditions that allow Russia to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said.
Foreign Minister Rubio's statement came after Russian President Vladimir Putin's meeting with US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff at the Kremlin on Wednesday which was considered positive for both sides.
"Maybe for the first time since this government began, we have some concrete examples of things Russia will ask to end the war," he said in an interview with Fox Business.
According to the top diplomat, the US now needs to compare Russia's condition with that of Europe and Ukraine.
President Putin and Witkoff held a three-hour meeting at the Kremlin. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the meeting took place constructively.
Ushakov, who took part in the meeting, said Witkoff had received several signals on the issue of Ukraine, and in retaliation, a reply signal had also been received from US President Donald Trump.
"The current situation is that our president has complete information, including our signal and a signal from President Trump. Trump has not been briefed on the outcome of this meeting," Ushakov said.
Separately, President Trump also praised the meeting as productive.
