JAKARTA - The South Jakarta Metro Police secured two men who stole a motorcycle with a machete on Jalan Karbela V, Setiabudi, South Jakarta on Sunday (19/7).

"Sunday, July 19, 2026, at around 13.30, two perpetrators who are suspected of being motorcycle thieves have been secured. The two perpetrators are initials LM and NS," said Head of Public Relations Section of the South Jakarta Metro Police, AKP Joko Adi, as reported by ANTARA, Monday, July 20.

Joko explained that the two perpetrators had different roles, namely one person was tasked with waiting on a motorcycle, while the other executed the theft.

When the perpetrator was about to take away the stolen motorcycle, the action was known by a witness who then shouted for help from residents.

"So the perpetrator was shouted at by the residents who saw it. Suddenly the residents were commanded, moved to try to secure the perpetrator who managed to take the victim's motorcycle," he said.

Because of panic, the perpetrator dropped the stolen motorcycle and tried to escape to his partner.

However, the motorcycle driven by his partner fell so that the two were arrested by residents and were the target of the mob.

"Because of panic, the motorcycle that was carried was thrown, then he intended to run to his friend who was waiting around the scene. Then he could escape, it turned out that because of panic again, the one who was riding the motorcycle fell," he said.

From the hands of the perpetrator, the police confiscated a machete, one letter T key and two keys that were allegedly used to damage the motorcycle lock.

As a result of being judged by the masses, the two perpetrators were injured and are currently undergoing treatment at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital.

Regarding the possibility that the two perpetrators were repeat offenders, Joko said investigators could not confirm it because both of them could not be questioned.

"The perpetrator was judged by the crowd and currently his statement has not been heard. This perpetrator from his identity we know his KTP from the Palembang area," he said.

He also ensured that the sharp weapon carried by the perpetrator had not been used to injure the victim or residents.
