JAKARTA - A military air strike on the market in the Timbuktu region, northern Mali, killed 18 people and injured seven people. The military said the attack targeted terrorists.

The People's Rights Defenders Group Azawad, linked to the Tuareg separatist rebels, said Mali's armed forces bombed a weekly 50 km (30 miles) market north of the city of Learnbeb.

Mali's military said it was launching airstrikes against what it called terrorist activity in the same region mentioned by human rights groups. The attack killed 11 terrorists.

North Mali is full of militant activities linked to al Qaeda and ISIS.

Suku Tuareg, kelompok etnis yang mendiami wilayah Sahara termasuk Mali utara, berjuang untuk mendapatkan tanah air yang mendekasi.

They staged an uprising against the Mali government in 2012, but the uprising was later hijacked by Islamist groups, which sparked a violent uprising that has since spread throughout the Sahel region of West Africa and its surroundings.

In July last year, the Tuareg rebels attacked a convoy of Mali soldiers and mercenaries from the Russian Wagner Group in the northern tip of the country, near the city of Tinzaouaten which is close to the border with Algeria.

Dozens of Russian and Mali soldiers were killed in the attack, rebels said.

It was not uncommon for Mali to carry out airstrikes against rebel targets in the north of the country.

21 people, including 11 children, were killed in a drone strike in Tinzaouaten in August, the Tuareg rebels said.

In October 2024, a drone strike in the highway in the Timbuktu region killed eight people, including children.
