Hasto Kristiyanto Detained, Coordinating Minister Yusril Respects KPK's Decision

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Correction Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that he respected the decision taken by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) regarding the detention of PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto.

"We respect the decisions taken by the KPK," said Yusril at the Presidential Palace complex, Jakarta, Thursday, February 20, as reported by ANTARA.

Yusril admitted that he did not know in detail the latest news about Hasto's detention.

He emphasized that the government cannot intervene in the legal process carried out by the KPK.

Yusril called the KPK a law enforcement state institution that is independent and has the authority to detain someone or prevent someone from traveling abroad.

Yusril also emphasized the importance of respecting the rights of people detained by the KPK, including the right to defend themselves.

He stated that the detained person could contact the lawyer to make legal efforts to ensure correct law enforcement.

Yusril emphasized that the KPK has the authority to detain or declare someone as a suspect, but the lawyer representing the person must also have the same opportunity to defend the legal interests of his client.

"So that's where justice will be realized. The KPK can do this, but he can also use lawyers to also defend his legal interests. So if I look at it from that point of view," said Yusril.

Meanwhile, KPK spokesman Tessa Mahardhika Sugiarto emphasized that the investigation into the alleged corruption against Hasto Kristiyanto was pure law enforcement without any political content.

"For the umpteenth time, the KPK has said that the determination of the suspect HK's brother is not part of politicization of power," said Tessa.
