JAKARTA - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov praised US President Donald Trump for calling previous US support for Ukraine's efforts to join the NATO military alliance the main cause of the war in Ukraine.
Trump said he did not see the possibility of Russia allowing Ukraine to join NATO and blamed former Democratic Party President Joe Biden for allegedly changing US positions regarding NATO membership in Ukraine.
"He is the first leader, and so far, in my opinion, the only Western leader to publicly and loudly say that one of the root causes of Ukraine's situation is the impeachment attitude of the previous administration that attracted Ukraine into NATO," Lavrov told lawmakers.
"No Western leader has ever said that, but he has said it several times. This has become a signal that he understands our position as President (Vladimir) Putin," Lavrov continued.
