US Ally But Not Agreeing, Qatar Reaffirms Solution 2 Countries For Palestine-Israel

JAKARTA - Qatar reiterated that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict must be resolved by a two-state solution.

This was in response to the suggestion of the President of the United States (US) Donald Trump for Palestinians to be transferred from Gaza to Egypt or Jordan.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry (Kemenlu) spokesman, Majed Al-Ansari, said his party disagreed with his ally, the US, in a number of ways.

"Our position is always clear about the need for Palestinians to accept their rights, and that the two-state solution is the only way forward," Ansari told a news conference when asked about Trump's proposal.

We do not [always] agree in many ways, with our allies, not only the United States. But we are working very closely with them, to ensure that we formulate joint policies," he added.

Qatar, the US and Egypt have jointly mediated a ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage release agreement that took effect last week. The effort halted more than 15 months of Israeli military aggression against Gaza since Hamas launched an attack on October 7, 2023.

On Monday last week, Trump repeated his desire to move Gazans to another country, having previously said he wanted to "clean up" the devastated Palestinian territories.

Trump told reporters he wanted Palestinians to live in an area where they could live without interference, revolution, and violence.

Ansari said Qatar, a country that allows its territory to become the largest US military base in the region, is in full cooperation with the Trump Government through the special representative of the US President for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.

"I will not comment on the discussions we are in with the US at the moment, but I will say that it is very productive," said Ansari.

"We have worked very closely with the Trump administration on regional issues as a whole, including Palestinian issues."
