Vice President Harris And US MPs Pay Respect To Late Jimmy Carter On Capitol

JAKARTA - A number of US leaders paid their respects to the 39th late president Jimmy Carter, when his body was buried for his final respects at Rotunda, Capitol Hill, Washington DC before being buried on Thursday.

Vice President Kamala Harris, a member of Congress and several Supreme Court judges gathered around Carter's coffin wrapped in the United States flag under the Capitol dome. Some praised Carter's performance as 39th president and the humanitarian work she has been working on for decades after leaving office in 1981.

"Jimmy Carter is a very rare example of a talented man who also walks with humility, simplicity and misery," said Vice President Kamala Harris, who is a member of the Democratic Party like Carter.

Two Republican politicians, Senate Leader John Thune and House Leader Mike Johnson also delivered remarks.

The carefully organized ceremony was held during a transitional period in Washington, as Republican President-elect Donald Trump prepares to hold the post of Democratic President Joe Biden on January 20. Security is tighter than usual, with fences surrounding the Capitol.

Carter's coffin, covered in flags, arrived on the Capitol on a horse train after the funeral procession in Pennsylvania Avenue.

Family members followed him on foot, as a tribute to Carter who walked along the highway during his 1977 inauguration. Cadets from the US Naval Academy saluted the former Navy submarine officer.

Carter's body will be buried in the Capitol Rotunda before being buried on Thursday, so that members of Congress and society can pay their last respects.

On Thursday, Carter's body will be brought in a convoy for a funeral ceremony at the Washington National Cathedral.

Previously, President Biden had ordered flags in government buildings to be flown by half a pole for 30 days as a sign of mourning.

The general public can see coffins from 18.00 to midnight local time.

On Wednesday, the final hour of honor will resume at 07.00 and Carter will be buried in Rotunda with a 24-hour military honorary escort.

Presidents Biden and Trump are expected to attend Carter's funeral ceremony at 10.00 on Thursday.

President Biden is expected to deliver his final tribute speech. After the ceremony, Carter's body will be flown back to Georgia. His body will be buried that day in his hometown in Plains, Georgia.
