JAKARTA - French Foreign Minister (Foreign Minister) Jean-Noel Barrot expressed his hope for Syria, which was "deal, stable, and peaceful" while visiting Damascus to hold talks on behalf of the European Union (EU) today Friday, January 3.
"This hope is real" but also "roof," Barrot told reporters at the French embassy in Damascus during his first visit to Syria since the old ruler Bashar Assad was ousted, quoted from AFP.
During his visit today in Syria, Barrot together with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerboc also visited Saydnaya prison.
The prison was said to be evidence of human rights violations committed by Bashar al-Assad while leading Syria before being eventually overthrown.
Western foreign ministers are in Syria to meet with the country's new authorities, including leader Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The visit was in the context of the highest-level visit of major Western countries since Assad was ousted on December 8, 2024.
