JAKARTA - Former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Wednesday announced his resignation from the Israeli Parliament (Knesset), after frequently taking a different stance against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies in the far-right government.
Gallant was sacked from government in November by Netanyahu, after months of disputes over the implementation of the war against Hamas in Gaza, but continued to maintain his post as a elected member of Knesset.
"Like on the battlefield, so is public service. There are times when a person has to stop, judge and choose directions to achieve their goals," Gallant said in a statement broadcast on television.
Gallant is often inconsistent with PM Netanyahu and his coalition allies from far-right and religious parties while in office, including issues of exceptions granted to ultra-Orthodox Jewish men from military service, sensitive issues in the country.
In March 2023, PM Netanyahu sacked Gallant after he urged a halt to the government's highly contested plans to cut the authority of the Supreme Court.

It is known that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Gallant and PM Netanyahu, along with a Hamas leader, on suspicion of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza conflict, which Israel opposes.
