Jakarta Has The Potential To Be Hit By 5 Annual Floods, DKI Provincial Government Prepares Weather Engineering

JAKARTA - Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Teguh Setyabudi said that Jakarta has the potential to be hit by extreme weather until the end of 2024. This was revealed after coordinating with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

It is predicted that high rainfall will occur on December 6 to 9, 2024. Furthermore, from the middle of the month to the end of December, the intensity of rain in Jakarta is also estimated to be quite high.

Jakarta, Teguh continued, has the potential to experience flooding with a fairly large volume, as happened five years ago, namely in early 2020.

"Even wanti-wanti may be a five-year cycle, like in 2020," Teguh told reporters, Friday, December 6.

Therefore, the DKI Provincial Government through the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) plans to carry out weather engineering to reduce the impact of Jakarta's floods in the future.

"The DKI Provincial Government will try to carry out weather engineering. The first is by using the existing funds, so it is in BPBD, for these days. This has started to be discussed together, so hopefully the day after tomorrow it can be determined," explained Teguh.

After that, the DKI Provincial Government will coordinate with the BMKG and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to review the need for further weather engineering from mid to late December.

If needed, the DKI Provincial Government will use an additional budget taken from the unexpected expenditure allocation (BTT) to re-do weather modifications.

"Of course we will calculate first, how much weather engineering we will do, so that later it will have an impact on how much budget we will need," explained Teguh.

"But because we use BTT funds, we have to have a statement of emergency status. Well, we are exploring this and we are coordinating it," he added.
