South Korea's ruling party leader said on Friday President Yoon Suk-yeol needed to be suspended from his post for the safety of the country for trying to impose a military emergency.
President Yoon declared martial law on Tuesday night to thwart "anti-state forces" among his domestic political opponents, but overturned the decision hours later after lawmakers opposed him.
The main opposition, the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) filed a impeachment motion against President Yoon, voting scheduled for Saturday evening, while national police have launched an investigation into President Yoon over claims of insurgency filed by opposition parties and activists.
On Thursday, the leader of the ruling People's Power Party (PPP) said he was against impeachment. Today, PPP leader Han Dong-hoon suggested the stance may change, given President Yoon's "credible evidence" of intent to arrest and detain political leaders in Gvacoon, just south of Seoul.
"I said yesterday, I would try not to pass this impeachment to prevent damage to the people and supporters caused by unprepared chaos, but I believe the suspension of President Yoon Suk Yeol's term of office will soon be needed to protect the Republic of Korea and its people given the newly revealed facts," Han said.
However, Han did not explicitly call for impeachment or respond to journalists when asked for clarification.
As previously reported, the PPP leader assessed that President Yoon needed to be suspended from his post, along with the disclosure of President Yoon's order to arrest prominent politicians during the military emergency announcement which was later canceled.
Han Dong-hoon said it was possible the president would again take "radical" actions such as a failed military emergency declaration if Yoon remained in power of the president.
"Given the newly revealed facts, I believe it is necessary to immediately suspend President Yoon Suk-yeol from his duty to protect the Republic of Korea and its people," Han said at an emergency meeting of party leaders at the National Assembly, referring to South Korea with his official name.
Han pointed out that on Thursday it was confirmed President Yoon had instructed the Counterintelligence Commander Yeo In-hyung to detain key political figures, accuse them of being an "anti-state" force, and had mobilized intelligence to detain them.
