Putin's Message To The West Through Oreshnik Missile Attack: Back Down If You Don't Want To Be Attacked

Russia fired a new medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile known as the "Oreshnik", or Thug Tree, into Ukraine on Thursday which Putin said was a direct response to Ukrainian forces' attacks on Russia with US and UK missiles.

In a special statement from the Kremlin just after 8 p.m., the Russian president said the war was escalating into a global conflict, although he avoided any nuclear rhetoric.

So far, Putin has also refrained from attacking Western countries.

In a statement, the Kremlin leader gave a notification to the West that Russia has the right to attack military installations of countries that allow Ukraine to use their missiles to attack Russia.

Ukraine is currently reportedly using US and UK missiles.

"Putin told the West to stop stop backward," Sergei Markov, a former Kremlin adviser, told Reuters.

"The signal Putin sent to the world is that we consider this attack a direct involvement of the United States and Britain in the fight against Russia," he said. "But we are not responding with all our might right now because attacks on Russia will not change the outcome of the war," added Markov.
