The National Police Chief Will Inspect And Take Strict Action On Police Involved In Drugs, One Of Which Is In Prison

JAKARTA - National Police Chief General Pol. Listyo Sigit Prabowo said he would investigate and take firm action against police officers who assisted in drug trafficking from correctional institutions (prisons).

"Anyone involved will be dealt with firmly, including the National Police itself. We will carry out an inspection," Listyo said quoting Antara.

Listyo targets the National Police as the leading sector for drug eradication, from prevention to rehabilitation activities.

Regarding rehabilitation, he said he always invites every district and province to have institutions for rehabilitation. Listyo admits that currently, institutions that provide services for rehabilitation are still limited.

On the other hand, Listyo said there was a density in prisons where 52 percent came from drug users and dealers.

"This is our challenge going forward, whether we have to continue to let it be like this or make improvements," he said.

Listyo said that the National Police has a duty from prevention to law enforcement. Even though it has enforced the law firmly, if prevention is still weak, then drug users cannot be reduced.

"The circulation is still there, so it will be difficult for us to save the nation's next generations," he said.

Therefore, Listyo stated that it was important for the National Police to cooperate with all ministries and institutions, especially the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, because most of the control of drug problems came from prisons.

"Because there are those who are sentenced to death, some are sentenced to life, but until now it is difficult to carry out executions. Finally, they carry out (transactions) activities from within the prison, in collaboration with unscrupulous persons," he said.

Listyo also asked the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) to participate in supervising the National Police regarding this matter.

"We are open to Kompolnas, because we really need to be monitored and repaired," he said.

Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Habiburokhman, is considering including the Narcotics Bill and the draft Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) to be included in the 2025 Priority Legislation Program (Prolegnas) list.

Executive Director of the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR) Erasmus Napitupulu asked Commission III of the DPR RI to prioritize a health approach and ensure that there is no over-criminalization in revising the Narcotics Law to overcome the problem of prison density.
