JAKARTA - Vice Chairman of Commission II of the House of Representatives Junimart Girsang explained that the Evaluation Committee for the Implementation of the 2020 Regional Elections recommended that the KPU review the timing of the 2024 regional elections.

"This will disrupt the periodization (tenure of the regional head) so we ask the KPU to review the stage even though in the Election Law mentioned implemented in November 2024," junimart was quoted as saying by Antara, Wednesday, April 7.

Junimart said the rules for the implementation of the 2024 Local Elections ballot in November will make all election processes expected to be completed in 2025.

That, according to him, if there is a candidate who filed a lawsuit the results of the election to the Constitutional Court (MK), the process is only completed in 2025 so that it will interfere with the period of office of the regional head.

Junimart said commission II of the House of Representatives suggested that election organizers and the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) meet President Joko Widodo to issue a replacement government regulation (perpu) to change the timing of the implementation of the 2024 regional elections.

Article 201 Paragraph (8) of Law No. 10 of 2016 concerning Local Elections mentions national simultaneous voting in the election of governors/deputy governors, regents/deputy regents, and mayors/deputy mayors throughout the Territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia held in November 2024.

Article 201 Paragraph 9 of the Election Law states that in order to fill the vacancy of governor/deputy governor, regent/deputy regent, and mayor/deputy mayor who ends his/her term in 2022 as referred to in Paragraph (3) and whose term ends in 2023 as referred to in Paragraph (5), appointed acting governor, acting regent, and acting mayor until the election of governor/deputy governor, regent/deputy regent, and mayor/deputy mayor through national concurrent elections in 2024.
