North Korea Reportedly Building An Inter-Korean Road That Was Exploded Last Week

JAKARTA - North Korea was building an unidentified building on the eastern part of the inter-Korean road that was detonated last week, a source said Thursday, amid rising cross-border tensions over North Korea's border activities.

Last Tuesday, North Korea blew up several parts of the eastern Donghae Line and the western Gyeongui Line, just north of the border, days after vowing to cut off all roads and railroads connected to the South and build a frontline defense structure.

Since the explosion, South Korea's border surveillance assets have seen North Korea level the ground on the two cut roads, and recently installed buildings on Jalan Donghae, according to the military source, reported by The Korea Times October 24.

The building is thought to be functioning as a framework for concrete border barriers.

The source said the military had not detected any signs of North Korea building such a building on Gyeongui Street.

It is known that this month's explosion marked the demolition of the total inter-Korean land route which was once considered a symbol of reconciliation and cooperation between the two Koreas.

North Korea has removed traces of unification after leader Kim Jong-un late last year defined Korea as "two hostile countries", saying there is no point in seeking reconciliation and unification with South Korea.
