Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said BRICS countries were influential in building international peace and security foundations, calling for sanctions against Israel if it did not implement a UN General Assembly resolution.

This was conveyed by President Abbas while attending the BRICS Plus Summit in Kazan, Russia on Thursday which was followed by the bloc member state and an invitation.

President Abbas called for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions to immediately stop Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, allow the entry of humanitarian aid, withdraw fully from the Gaza Strip, and for the Palestinian State to carry out its full duty to repatriate refugees to their territory and rebuild, according to WAFA 24 October.

He said achieving justice for the Palestinian people was the most important test of this historical stage. The time has come to stop injustice and end practices that rely on military force and prolong the occupation.

President Abbas called on world countries to implement UN General Assembly resolutions regarding the opinion of the International Court's advisers, requiring occupational authorities to end the illegal presence in Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, within one year.

He also called for sanctions for Israel if it is not committed to implementing a General Assembly resolution, as well as the need to cooperate with the United Nations and related parties to hold an international peace conference.

He also called on the international community to reject and condemn the Israeli government's decision to close the UNRWA headquarters in East Jerusalem, disrupting its work in caring for Palestinian refugees.

Furthermore, President Abbas stressed there is an urgent need for a more balanced and fair global system, given the current failure of international system institutions to find effective solutions to the increasing crisis and chronic problems suffered by the world, especially Palestinian problems.

"In this context, we rely heavily on BRICS countries, which have become influential and decisive weights in building the foundations of international peace and security," President Abbas said.

President Abbas reaffirmed the Palestinian State's desire to join the BRICS group, to enhance partnerships, dialogues, engagement in various activities with its members, stressing Palestinians' full readiness to commit to the bloc's goals, practices, and activities, in order to achieve its goals.
