JAKARTA - The European Union on Wednesday urged countries attending its BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, to ask President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.

EU foreign policy spokesman Peter Stano condemned Russia's "benefit" for its leadership in the group, noting there was an arrest warrant for the Russian leader.

"We believe that all participants of the summit in Kazan will use this event to once again urge Putin to end the war against the Ukrainian people," he said.

The spokesman also said the EU supports the United Nations Secretary-General Antulio Guterres, who attended the summit.

"We believe he will strengthen calls for Russia and Putin to fully and unconditionally stop brutal aggression against the Ukrainian people," he said.

Russia hosted the 16th BRICS Summit, an organization founded in 2006, in Kazan City on October 22-24, quoted from TASS.

Brazil, Russia, India, and China co-founded the organization, with South Africa joining in 2011.

On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates became full members. The Kazan summit will be the first to be attended by a new member of the association.

More than 20 leaders, including Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian attended the summit. A total of representatives from around 30 countries are expected to take part.
