The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency Issues An Early Warning To Be Alert To Extreme Weather In East Java

SURABAYA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Juanda Station in Surabaya, estimates that 29 areas in East Java have the potential for extreme weather. The community is advised to be vigilant because East Java has entered a transition period or season shift.

"There are several atmospheric disturbances that cause a potential increase in rainfall intensity in East Java, so it is necessary to be aware of the potential for extreme weather such as hail, tornadoes, heavy rain, and instantaneous strong winds from Cumulonimbus clouds", said Head of BMKG Juanda Surabaya station, I Wayan Mustika, through his written broadcast, Tuesday, April 6.

Based on these atmospheric disturbances, Wayan reminded the need to be aware of rainfall with heavy intensity, which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds. Heavy rains have the potential to occur for the next week in several areas of East Java.

Such as Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Lamongan, Tuban, Bojonegoro, Jombang, Nganjuk, Tulungagung, Batu, Jember, Situbondo, Banyuwangi, Pamekasan, Mojokerto, Madiun, Ponorogo, Magetan, Pacitan, Tuban, Blitar, Kediri, Malang, Pasuruan, Probolinggo, Lumajang , Gresik, Sumenep, Bangkalan, and Sampang.

In addition, the people of East Java are also reminded of the active low-pressure pattern and the tropical cyclone of Seroja in southern Indonesia, which forms a low-pressure trough extending from west to east. This causes convergence (wind confluence zone) in East Java.

Currently, said Wayan, the activation of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) which brings wet air masses to Indonesian territory also affects the dynamics of the East Java atmosphere. MJO is a phenomenon in the atmosphere that indicates the movement of large-scale convective air systems.

"This is reinforced by the presence of Rossby wave interference which can increase the potential for extreme weather events", he said.

Therefore, Wayan appealed to the public to remain vigilant and cautious about the impacts of hydrometeorological disasters such as potential floods, landslides, flash floods, puddles, strong winds, fallen trees, and slippery roads.

"For coastal communities and users of sea transportation, please be aware of the potential for high waves in the waters of East Java", he said.
