YOGYAKARTA - President Prabowo appointed Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan as Chairman of the National Economic Council (DEN). Had said that he would retire, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs in the Jokowi era again held an important position in the latest government period. The appointment of Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan as chairman of the DEN is stated in the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 139/P of 2024 concerning the Appointment of Chairman of the National Economic Council. The inauguration was carried out by President Prabowo at the State Palace on Monday (21/10).

"With the name God Almighty, the President of the Republic of Indonesia... first, starting from the time of the inauguration, appointed General TNI Retired. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan as Chairman of the National Economic Council," the decision read.

The National Economic Council is an institution that existed 25 years ago, namely in 1999. Let's recognize the tasks of the National Economic Council carried out by Luhut.

The National Economic Council or DEN was first introduced in 1999 in the era of President Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur. This institution was inaugurated through Presidential Decree (Keppres) Number 144 of 1999 and signed by Gus Dur.

Based on the Presidential Decree, it is stated that the National Economic Council serves to advise the President in the economic sector. The performance of the DEN is needed as an effort to accelerate the response to the crisis and restructuring of the national economy, as well as readiness to respond to the dynamics of globalization.

In this case, the National Economic Council carries a direct responsibility to the head of state or the President. This is stated in Article 2 of Presidential Decree No. 144 of 1999. DEN's duties are different from those of the Coordinating Ministry (Kemenko) for the Economy.

It was emphasized that the DEN institution would focus more on the tasks of formulating economic policies directly related to the president. Meanwhile, the task of the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy is more responsible for coordinating the ministry for the economy.

Based on Presidential Decree No. 144 of 1999, the tasks of the National Economic Council are as follows:

Members of the National Economic Council consist of the Chair, Deputy Chair, and Secretary as collective leaders. In addition, the DEN also has members with a maximum number of 10 people. In carrying out its duties, the DEN will cooperate with central government agencies or officials, local governments, experts, the business world, the community, as well as parties deemed necessary.

At the request of the National Economic Council, government agencies have an obligation to convey the information needed for the smooth implementation of the DEN's duties.
