EU Gives New Sanctions To Russia Regarding Participating In Mixed Elections Of Other Countries

JAKARTA - The European Union (EU) will impose new sanctions on Russia, which is suspected of interfering in the general election affairs (elections) of other countries.

According to EU Council resolution quoted via Tass, Tuesday, October 8, the sanctions mechanism will be discussed to punish Russia's actions to make elections for other countries unstable and run smoothly or destabilize.

In that resolution, it was also stated that Russia's hybrid actions in interfering with the elections of other countries had undermined the fundamental values of the EU, its member countries, security, independence, and the values of international organizations.

In general, this penalty will not be much different from the EU's previous sanctions against Russia.

Separately, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, explained the hybrid threats blamed on Russia on EU and NATO countries.

Borrell said: "Cyber attacks, information manipulation and disruption campaigns, arson, vandalism and sabotage cases, including against key EU infrastructure, as well as instrumentalization of migration and other disturbing acts."

Borrell also believes Russia continues to disrupt satellite communications, violate European airspace, and carry out physical attacks on individuals in the EU region.
