Hundreds Of Green Cucak Birds Arrested By The North Kalimantan Police Ditkrimsus

TANJUNG SELOR - Polda North Kalimantan (Kaltara) revealed the crime of trading protected animals in the form of 187 green cucak birds (chloropsis sonnerati).

North Kalimantan Police Chief Inspector General Hary Sudwijanto revealed that many of these animals live in Malinau, Tana Tidung, and Bulungan regencies.

"This bird is very protected and must be preserved," he said, Thursday, August 29.

Hary explained that this case was revealed on August 28, 2024. At that time, the team of the Ditkrimsus Polda Kaltara together with the East Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) searched the shophouse belonging to the suspect with the initials BB in West Tarakan, Tarakan City.

"In the shophouse, a protected animal was found, namely a green cucak. The suspect is a resident of the city of Surabaya, East Java, who owns a house domiciled in Tarakan City," he explained.

The perpetrators sell these protected animals illegally and conduct conventional buying and selling in shophouses owned by the perpetrators and offer their merchandise through social media.

"From the police investigation, the perpetrators marketed a lot of green cucak birds in Surabaya, East Java. For green cucak, yellow neck types are sold in the price range of Rp. 100,000 to Rp. 200 thousand per head. Meanwhile, black-neck green cucak is sold for Rp. 400 thousand per head," he said.

"The profit from the sale is that the perpetrators can get Rp150 million from the sale of 500 green cucak birds per month," he continued.

The Regional Police Chief emphasized that the perpetrators could be suspected of Article 40 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 21 paragraph (2) of Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and Their Ecosystems.

"The maximum sentence is five years in prison and a maximum fine of Rp. 100 million," he said.
