JAKARTA - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un directly inspected the 240mm dual rocket launch test with a new guide system, state media said Wednesday.

The report amid speculation the new artillery system could be given to Russia for use in the war with Ukraine.

Leader Kim attended a test run of the double rocket launch system (MRLS) on Tuesday produced at the defense industry company under the Second Economics Commission, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The weapon can put Seoul and its surrounding areas within target range.

"MRLS, which is technically updated in maneuverability and concentrated shooting capability, has proven profitable in all indexes, including a newly implemented guidance system, control capability, and damage power," KCNA reported, quoted from The Korea Times Aug. 28.

Leader Kim "established an important policy that will be taken in producing new artillery and equipping army units with him," he added, without providing further details.

Earlier, North Korea in February said it had developed a 240mm rocket launcher that was "controlled", a move that could increase its weapons capabilities by increasing range and precision.

In May, the country said it would deploy the weapon system to Korean People's Army units between 2024 and 2026.

Separately, observers say North Korea appears to be showing off the performance of the rocket launcher in a bid to supply it to Russia for use in its war with Ukraine.

The shooting test was carried out when South Korea and the United States conducted their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise in the summer, which will end on Thursday.

Pyongyang itself has long criticized such joint ally exercises as preparation for an invasion of him.
