BMKG: Earthquake 5.1 Magnitude Shakes East Sumba, No Tsunami Potential

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed that the tectonic earthquake that rocked the East Sumba region, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) was triggered by rock deformation activity within the Indo-Australian Plate.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said that this earthquake was included in the medium earthquake category with a downward movement mechanism or normal fault.

Gempa yang memiliki kekuatan 5,1 magnitudo tersebut tidak berpotensi menimbulkan tsunami, meskipun sempat menimbulkan getaran yang dirasakan di wilayah Waingapu dengan skala intensitas II-III MMI.

BMKG reported that the earthquake occurred on Friday, August 9 at night at 23:40 WIB with the epicenter at sea, precisely at coordinates 9.45 degrees South Latitude and 120.57 degrees east longitude, about 47 kilometers east of Waingapu at a depth of 72 kilometers.

Until early Saturday morning, BMKG confirmed that no aftershocks had occurred, and there were no reports of damage caused by the earthquake.
