Earlier, Iran's Supreme Leadership Office had announced that funeral prayers would be held at the university before mourners marched to Azadi Square.

Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an attack on his residence in Tehran, Hamas confirmed on Wednesday morning.

He was in the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration of the elected president Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday afternoon. Prior to his inauguration, he met Khamenei and Pezeshkian on two different occasions on Tuesday.

"The criminal and terrorist Zionist regime has prepared a basis for severe punishment for itself with this action, and we consider it our duty to avenge his blood as he has died in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran," said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei earlier.

The plan is that after today's funeral ceremony in Tehran, Haniyeh's body will be buried in Doha, Qatar tomorrow.
