New UK Government Now Fully Leave Netanyahu's Arrest Affairs To ICC

JAKARTA - The new British government said it had canceled its predecessor's request for the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The chief prosecutor of the ICC has requested an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, on suspicion of war crimes, angering Israel and its closest ally, the United States.

He also requested a similar warrant for the three leaders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

But since then, the centre-left Labor Party has taken power from the Conservative Party through elections, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer's spokesman told new government journalists it would cancel requests.

"In line with our old position that this is a matter that must be resolved by the court to decide," he said.

The government strongly believes in the rule of law, both internationally and domestically, and the separation of power.

Although the Conservative Party often opposed the supranational jurisdiction during their 14 years of rule, including the European Union and the European Human Rights Court, Starmer, a former lawyer, gave different opinions.

Last week he told European leaders his government would have great respect for international law.

The ICC, which handles war crimes and crimes against humanity, has investigated both sides in the conflict between Israel and Palestine since 2021.

In that year, the ICC ruled they had jurisdiction after Palestinian authorities signed up for the court in 2015, and had been made a United Nations observer state.

Several scholars and member states said the decision left a decision on the 1993 interpretation of the Oslo Agreement on Palestinian jurisdictions over Israeli citizens for the next stage in the trial process.
