10 Migrants Died While Crossing The Panamanian-Colombian Gap

JAKARTA - Ten migrants were found dead after drowning while trying to cross the dangerous Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia.

The bodies were found in tributaries near the Carreto area, said the National Border Service (Senafront). However, it did not say when the body was found.

As reported by Reuters on Wednesday, July 24, authorities said migrants passing through Darien were mostly trying to reach the United States, making themselves vulnerable to organized crime and forest danger.

Risks increase in the rainy season due to rising river surfaces.

Increasing migration has led Panama to increase border security and seek international assistance.

Last year, it was recorded that half a million migrants crossed the Darien Gap to seek better safety and economic prospects.

In 2024, more than 200,000 migrants cross the forest.
