JAKARTA - Floods in the Tolinggula District, North Gorontalo Regency, Gorontalo Province, have submerged residential areas and plantations belonging to residents since Saturday (13/7).

"The floods started at 15.00 WITA on Saturday due to the overflow of the Limbato River due to high rainfall. Residents' settlements and gardens were submerged with water levels reaching two meters," said Limbato Village Head Udin Lauposo in Gorontalo, Sunday.

Currently, he said, the flood is starting to recede, but the weather in the area still has the potential for rain.

"All hamlet heads are still moving to record the number of affected residents, submerged houses and losses incurred. We immediately reported this condition to the sub-district and district governments after the data was collected," said UdinLauposo.

According to him, after the flash flood in March 2024 in the area has the potential for flooding.

"After the flash flood, this is the second flood that hit villages in this area. This was triggered by river conditions that have been leveled with roads or plantations. We hope that there will be attention for river normalization and dredging if the construction of embankments that require a large budget cannot be carried out," said Udin, quoted by Antara.

He said the construction of the Limbato River embankment is estimated to reach one kilometer and is very necessary to prevent river water from overflowing into settlements and plantations which are the source of people's income. Given the high rainfall in just a few hours, river water will overflow into plantations, village main roads, and residential areas.

"The Limbato Watershed (DAS) requires handling to prevent this area from becoming a flood subscription," he said.

Tominggula sub-district head Tony Abas said floods hit the area, especially at points that were prone to flooding. Floods have been caused by high rainfall since Saturday afternoon.

"There was also a landslide that occurred on the border between Limbato and Papualangi villages," he said.
