JAKARTA - A man was caught trying to smuggle more than 100 live snakes into mainland China by firing him into his pants, according to the country's customs authorities.
The man was intercepted by customs officers in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen while traveling via Futian Port, checkpoints between Hong Kong and mainland China, the agency said in a statement on Tuesday.
During the examination, officers found six canvas shaving bags that were sealed with a tape in their pants pocket.
"Officers opened the bags and found every bag containing a number of live snakes in various shapes and colors," the statement said.
"After calculating, a total of 104 snakes were found," the statement continued.
Five species of snakes were then identified by officers, namely milk snakes, western hognose snakes, corn snakes, Texas rat snakes and bull snakes. Four of them are not native to China. However, none of the species was venomous.
The statement said the incident occurred "a few days ago," but did not specify the exact date.
