JAKARTA - DPR Speaker Puan Maharani asked the government to immediately distribute aid to earthquake victims in Batang, Central Java. He also emphasized the importance of a comfortable place for earthquake refugees.

As is known, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 and 4.6 rocked Batang on Sunday (7/7) yesterday. The epicenter of the earthquake was in northeastern Batang and in southwest Kaliwareng.

As a result of the earthquake, at least 9 people were injured and 49 buildings were damaged. Puan asked the Government to immediately take the necessary steps to help earthquake victims.

Emergency assistance such as food, drinking water, and medicine must be immediately distributed to the victims. Ensure the needs for babies, children, the elderly and pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are also prepared," said Puan, Monday, July 8.

Until now, joint BNPB officers, BPBD, Basarnas, TNI/Polri, Tagana, volunteers and others are still on standby at the scene and conducting data collection related to the impact of damage to residents' homes and public facilities due to the earthquake.

"Joint officers must ensure that all victims have been handled properly, lest any unknown missed victims," said Puan.

He added that the local government must also prepare shelters for earthquake victims who are comfortable and safe. Puan said that refugee camps also needed to pay attention to the needs of all victims.

In addition to basic needs, refugee camps must be proper for the community to occupy even though they are temporary in nature. Make it easier to provide assistance to victims for every need they need, including medical officers must always be on standby, "said the first woman to serve as chairman of the DPR RI.

This earthquake that occurred caused the Batang Regency Government to decide to establish an emergency response status. The central government is asked to help meet the needs that must be channeled by increasing this status.

"The government also needs to increase public awareness about preventive and emergency response measures when an earthquake occurs. Educational campaigns on how to act before, during, and after the earthquake are very important," added Puan.

Bung Karno's grandson ensured that the DPR would continue to monitor developments in the situation and be ready to assist efforts to recover after the earthquake. Puan also emphasized that the DPR will continue to encourage the Government to ensure that the victims get the help they need.

"Of course post-earthquake recovery needs to be a concern, including infrastructure improvement because there are houses that have been damaged by the earthquake. Assistance must be right on target," he said.
