JAKARTA - The Taiwanese government raised its travel warning to China, telling its citizens not to leave unless it is absolutely necessary.

The warning follows threats from Beijing last week to execute those deemed to support Taiwan's "hard-headed" independence.

Reported by Reuters, Liang Wen-chieh, spokesman for Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, said travel warnings issued also apply in Chinese-run cities of Hong Kong and Macau.

Last week, when announcing new legal guidelines, China threatened to execute Taiwan's independence separatist group in extreme cases, which further escalated tensions that drew criticism from Lai and his government, as well as the United States.

Liang said the guidelines pose a serious threat to the safety of Taiwanese visiting China, in addition to other actions China has taken to strengthen its national security laws.

"If you don't need to go, don't go," he said, Thursday, June 27.
