JAKARTA - The Ukrainian military said they managed to damage three Russian air defense systems in a missile attack on the Moscow-occupied Crimean Peninsula on Sunday evening local time.

The attacks hit an S-400 system in Dzhankoi and two S-300 systems near Yevpatoriya and Chornumberske which resulted in "significant losses" to Russia's air defenses, Ukraine's general staff said on Monday.

The Ukrainian military said its attack had shut down radar on the Russian system and detonated ammunition in the area.

"No single of our missiles was intercepted by enemy air defenses that were'very effective'," the Ukrainian military said on its Telegram account.

There was no immediate comment from the Russian Ministry of Defense. However, local Telegram channels reported an explosion near Dzhankoi and Yevpatoriya.

Russia is known to have repeatedly launched ballistic missiles into southern Ukraine from the Moscow-captured and occupied Crimean Peninsula in 2014.

During the last two years of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine has carried out several air and sea strikes against Russia's targets on the peninsula, causing significant damage to Moscow's fleet in the Black Sea.

Ukraine said it had damaged two ferries there on May 30 and stopped their operations between Russia's peninsula and mainland.

The ships have been used as reserves for 18 km of Russian-made bridges previously also attacked by Ukraine.
