JAKARTA - Palestinian leaders demanded an emergency UN Security Council meeting, as Gaza underwent its deadliest day according to local health authorities, as Israel carried out an attack on Saturday on the pretext of releasing hostages.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for an emergency UN DK session to discuss what the Palestinian Foreign Ministry called Israel's "terrible killing" while rescuing four hostages.
"Israel's attack on the Nuseirat camp has claimed the lives of hundreds of martyrs and left many others injured," said a statement posted to X.
"President Abbas is involved in intensive communications with relevant Arab and international parties to hold a hearing urging the UN Security Council," the statement continued.
"The goal is to overcome Israel's ongoing aggression against the Palestinian people and force the Israeli occupation to comply with international legitimacy resolutions, including those calling for an immediate ceasefire," he said.
Israel's attack on Saturday, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health as of Sunday, killed 274 people and injured 698 others, making the deadliest day in the Palestinian enclave in six months.
Gaza's Health Ministry noted that nearly 300 people died in the region on December 10, 2023.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) denied the figures, saying they estimated the number of victims from the operation was "under 100."
