Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would "state the truth" about the war against Hamas in Gaza when he addressed the US Congress on July 24 during a visit to Washington, Republican leaders said.

Netanyahu will speak at a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement.

"I am deeply moved to have the privilege of representing Israel before Congress and convey the truth about our fair war against those who are trying to destroy us in front of representatives of the American people and around the world," Netanyahu said in a statement.

Netanyahu's visit comes amid tensions between him and US President Joe Biden, who supported Israel's campaign in Gaza but has recently been more critical of Israeli tactics and withheld shipments of a number of bombs.

It is not clear whether Netanyahu will meet Biden during his visit to the US.

Biden's support for Israel emerged as a political responsibility for the president ahead of the US elections in November 2024, with several Democratic Party members and voters angry over thousands of civilian deaths in Gaza.

Republicans have also criticized Biden for his attitude towards the war, saying he did little to help Israel.
