JAKARTA - A total of three cities in Indonesia are listed as cities with unusual hot temperatures or anomalies exacerbated by climate change for the March-May 2024 period, according to a report issued by Climate Central. The People's Exposed to Climate Change: March-May 2024" report shows Makassar in South Sulawesi, Semarang in Central Java, and Jakarta is on the list of cities with unusual hot temperatures exacerbated by climate change. In a report released on Thursday, as quoted from Antara, Climate Central put Makassar at the top of the list of cities in the world with hot temperatures anomalous due to climate change. This is based on a record 92 days in the climate shift index (CSI) level 3 or higher and the temperature anomaly reaches 1.2 degrees Celsius. Semarang occupies the 11th position of the same list with a record 88 days at CSI level 3 or higher and an anomaly at 1.4 degrees Celsius. Jakarta is on the list of global major cities with unusual hot temperatures due to climate change in fourth place with a 77-day record at CSI level 3 or higher and a 0.9-degree Celsius temperature anomaly. The report describes the CSI method used by Climate Central to measure the local influence of climate change on daily temperatures around the world. CSI level 1 means climate change can be detected, technically, temperature rise is at least 1.5 times more likely, while CSI level 2 means temperature rise is at least twice as likely. The report also puts the period March, April, and May 2024 breaking monthly records in global temperature records. The impact of climate change due to human activity, including burning fossil fuels, can be seen specifically in the form of extreme heat.

According to the report, as a result of climate change, about one in four people in the world experienced a temperature increase of at least three times every day, during March 1 to May 31, 2024. The peak was on April 6, 2024, when 2.7 billion people or one in three people in the world felt unusual temperatures with the strong influence of climate change.
