JAKARTA - The National Police have arrested Chaowalit Thungduang alias Sia Paeng Nanoo alias Sulaiman, the number one fugitive from the Thai authorities. From a temporary investigation, Indonesia was chosen to be a hiding place because it has a face resemblance to the people of the country.
"He is like the face of Indonesia. That's why he went to Indonesia under the name Sulaiman," said the Director of Narcotics Crime at the National Police, Brigadier General Mukti Juharsa, quoted Monday, June 3.
On his escape, Chaowalit Thungduang alias Sia Paeng Nanoo was originally not directly to Indonesia. This fugitive first went to India.
However, the suspect feels that India is insecure and his whereabouts will be easily known.
"From Thailand to India first, then to Aceh," he said.
"Because his face in India is not the same as his face," continued Mukti.
To get to Indonesia from India, fugitive Chaowalit Thungduang alias Sia Paeng Nanoo takes the sea route.
Kabareskrim Polri Komjen Wahyu Widada said that Chaowalit's arrest was based on a red notice from the Royal Thai Police on February 16, 2024.
"This fugitive is one of the criminals who has been designated the most wanted fugitive in Thailand for committing various crimes before finally fleeing to Indonesia to hide," said Wahyu.
While in Indonesia, Chaowalit used a fake identity, ID card, or family card (KK) and a birth certificate made by an Indonesian citizen in Aceh with the initials FS.

"Arriving in Indonesia, there is an Indonesian citizen with the initials FS who was previously introduced by one of the witnesses in Thailand to help fugitives create false identities as an Indonesian citizen on behalf of Sulaiman. The false identities are in the form of ID cards, families, and birth certificates as residents of East Aceh," he said.
Meanwhile, Chaowalit Thongduang was arrested in Bali. Currently, the National Police will carry out the extradition process or repatriation to Thailand.
